The Battle Of Ois Cove

The burnt and abandoned town was a welcome sight for Ludwig. Ludwig and his band of bandits had stolen a relic from a caravan that was headed to Parravon and were planning to sell it to some collector in the Empire for a high price, but a group of knights had sworn to reclaim it from him and were now only hours away from catching up to him, but he wasn't going to let them get it without a fight. "Get into that abandoned town and set up, we'll not let these Bret pansies get out gold!" Ordered Ludwig.

This is a 875 point battle report between me(Bretonnians) and the Empire. My army was this:

- Paladin General with Mithril Greathelm (the total points value of these magic items is 55pts, but my opponent let me use them anyway.), Sword Of Battle, Heavy Armour, Barded Warhorse, Lance and Questing Virtue.

- Paladin BSB with Valourous Standard (I didn't have enough points to use the Banner Of The Lady), Hand Weapon, Heavy Armour, Barded Warhorse, Lance and Questing Virtue.

- Damsel Of The Lady with 1st Level Magic, Warhorse. Heavens magic(I rolled up Portent Of Far as my spell).

- 15 Men At Arms with Spears with full command.

- 12 Bowmen with Sergeant.

- 9 Knights of the Realm with Standard Bearer.

The Empire Army was:

- Captain with Hand Weapon, Spear, Armour Of Faith and Crossbow.

- Captain(Army General) with Great Weapon, Pistol and Heavy Armour.

- Battle Wizard with 2nd Level Magic. Death magic(Death Dealer and Drain Life is what he got).

- 16 Handgunners

- 15 Halberdiers with full command.

- 18 Swordsmen with Standard Bearer and Musician.

- 20 Mercenary Orc Boy Big 'Uns with Boss. (Not exactly legal in game terms, but still fun to play with)

THE BOARD:

The northern edge of the board had a ruined town with broken-down houses, an intact wooden palisade and two small towers on it. The west and eastern edges had rocks, trees and other small clumps of terrian on them and the southern board edge had a small wooded area.

DEPLOYMENT:

My opponent won the roll for picking table edge and chose to set up in the ruined town/wooden palisade area. He set his handgunners up along the palisade, and his three fighting units up out the front, ready for combat. The Wizard was placed in one of the towers, the Spear Captain(This is what I call the Empire Captain armed with the Spear) was out to on side and the Captain General was placed in the Swordsmen unit.

I set up opposite him, with my bowmen getting ready to enter the wooded area and my BSB, General-led Knight unit and Spearmen set to charge the Empire.

I chose to take the Blessing so the Empire got the first turn.

EMPIRE TURN ONE:

The Empire Halberdiers and Swordsmen moved forwards, the Orcs stood still and waited.

No one was in range for shooting. Luckily for me. No Magic either.

No Combats.

BRETONNIA TURN ONE:

The Bowmen moved up into the wooded area, to take cover until they could shoot at someone or get in range of the Handgunners. The Knights, BSB and Spearmen marched towards the Empire battleline. The Damsel followed.

No Magic, Shooting or Combat.

EMPIRE TURN TWO:

The Swordsmen fell back, trying to get out of charge range of the Knights, while the Halberdiers moved towards the Spearmen. The Orcs squabbled.

No magic.

The Handgunners tried to fire, but only 4 of the possible 8 managed it due to the Blessing! Of those only 1 hit, but still blasted a poor, honourable knight from his saddle, oh dear! The Spear Captain fired his crossbow and hit a knight but rolled a 1 and did not wound.

BRETONNIA TURN TWO:

CHARGE!!! My Knights smashed into the Swordsmen and my General challenged the Empire General to mortal combat and he accepted. My Spearmen charged the Halberdiers, and my BSB and Damsel followed up behind the melee.

My very first spell is cast with Irresistable Force! Wow! The Knights benefit from the Portent Of Far.

My Bowmen fired at the Handgunners, but the wooden palisade's Hard Cover saved them.

My General's lance slaughted the Empire General, his Greatsword not even coming into the combat! My knights slew one Swordsman and the horses managed to take down four of the enemy. The Swordsmen slew one knight in their return attack. The Swordsmen amazingly passed their break test!

The Spearmen and Halberdiers killed 2 of each other and the combat was drawn.

EMPIRE TURN THREE:

The Orc Big 'Uns charged the flank of my knights, who held.

Death Dealer was cast and dispelled.

Three Bowmen died a quick death at the bullets of the Handgunners. One Bowman was shot down by the Spear Captain's crossbow.

The Orcs hammered my Knights but they all saved with their armour. The Swordsmen failed to kill anything. My knights and General failed to wound anything, my General's steed killed one foe. My Knights lost the combat but did not break. One Spearman and one Halberdier died, the combat was drawn again.

BRETONNIA TURN THREE:

My BSB charged the Halberdiers in the flank. My Damsel took cover.

The Winds of Magic were strong and Portent Of Far was cast on the Knights and not dispelled.

Yet again my Bowmen showed that they would rather be Knights Errant and did not hit anything.

One of the Orcs hit and nearly wounded a Knight but was turned aside by armour, three Swordsmen died. The Spearmen killed three Halberdiers, who of course killed three Spearmen in return, but my BSB killed one more Halberdier, the Empire Halberdiers held.

EMPIRE TURN FOUR:

The Spear Captain charged into the combat with the Knights.

Death Dealer was cast again and dispelled again, my Damsel is obviously very talented in the Arcane Arts!

Two Bowmen were shot and died.

The Spear Captain challenged my General, this would be a good battle! The Spear Captain's attacks were defended by my General's great armour. The Captain's Ward Save from the Armour Of Faith saved him twice. One Swordsman and one Knight died in the combat.

Seven Halberdiers were diced up by my Spearmen and BSB, The Halberdiers killed one Spearman in return. The Halberdiers ran for it, they were only two strong now so they could not rally. (Because they were below 25% of their orginal number)

BRETONNIA TURN FOUR:

My BSB charged into the Orcish flank while the Spearmen moved around towards the Wooden Palisade to take out those annoying Handgunners.

Portent Of Far was dispelled after being cast.

A single Handgunner was felled, a Bretonnian arrow buried in his chest.

The Combat between my General and the Spear Captain continued, I failed to get past his Ward and he failed to get past my armour. Two Swordsmen and one Orc died with no losses to me.

EMPIRE TURN FIVE:

The Halberdiers ran off the board.

The Empire Battle Wizard cast Drain Life on a 14 but I dispelled it on a 14 too!

One Bowman was taken down by a handgunner bullet, the Bowmen numbered only five now.

My General finally bested the Spear Captain in combat and wounded him twice, killing the Hero on the spot. One Knight, three Swordsmen and a single Orc perished in brutal combat. The Swordsmen broke and were run down but the Orcs held, my Knights and BSB stayed to fight while my General chased down the enemy. (I re-read the rulebook after the match and realised that this was actually an illegal move, whoops! I'll be more careful next time)

BRETONNIA TURN FIVE:

My General charged the tower that the Empire Wizard was hiding in, and the Spearmen continued towards the Handgunners. I then realised that the handgunners were too far away to reach with the Spearmen but they were going to be able to charge the Wizard in the tower next turn.

I failed to cast Portent Of Far.

A Handgunner was killed by the Bowmens' arrows.

Two Orcs and Two Knights died, my Knights stayed, although only barely. The Wizard was saved by the "Need 6s to hit" rule with being inside buildings.

EMPIRE TURN SIX:

No Movement.

One Bowman met his end on an Empire bullet.

Two Orcs died in combat while the combat with the Wizard continued, the building saving him yet again.

BRETONNIA TURN SIX:

The Spearmen charged the Tower with the Wizard in it.

Portent Of Far was cast on my Knights.

All my shots missed.

My Spearmen and General did not wound the Wizard but he ran anyways and was slaughtered.

One Orc died and the rest fled 12 inches! I chased them but only rolled 11! They got away!

THE END OF THE BATTLE:

937 VPs for the Bretonnians. 189 VPs for the Empire.

Empire Deaths: 47
Bretonnian Deaths: 20
Empire Survivors: 16
Bretonnian Survivors: 18

It ends in a Massacre in Bretonnia's favour. I hope you enjoyed this Battle Report.

Silence dominated the field now, a few short hours after the battle. Ludwig was dead and almost all of his men had been killed or captured, a handful escaped but they were quickly rounded up and thrown in Bretonnian prisons. The relic was going to make it to Parravon after all..
