After several weeks of waiting and watching for any sign of enemy activity a message came from the small town of Delberz that a strange Altar had been sighted in the nearby forest. Immediately summoning his cavalry to investigate this new threat, Jan rode with all speed to the nearby village. After a day’s ride, Jan and his knights came indeed upon an Altar for the Dark Powers, but they were surprised that there was no sign of followers of the Powers. Just as they contemplated this, what seemed to be the vanguard of an enormous horde poured out of the forest. Quickly taking action to bottleneck the forces of Chaos at the edge of the forest, Jan’s cavalry raced across the field to deal with the enemy vanguard and block the bottlenecks at the edge of the forest. Soon, one of the bottlenecks was secured by some of the Ungol Horse archers, but Jan’s forces were unable to secure the other point from where the forces of Chaos exited the forest. Yet his forces had held up the forces of the Dark Powers for long enough to have the engineers that had come with the expedition destroy the Altar. With the destruction of the Altar, the morale of the Horde was soon broken and the remains fled back into the forest. The victorious army was about to start its celebrations when suddenly Jan realised where the fleeing Chaos army was going…Delherz. With only a small garrison stationed there, even the damaged Chaos army would easily take the village. At once, Jan mobilised his troops again and began the race to Delherz. When they reached the other side of the forest, they encountered the rearguard of the Dark Horde. It was a beastmen force, led by none other than the famed and feared Krashnak, favoured of Khorne and Flayer of Humans. This was truly a worthy foe, Jan realised, but they would have to defeat him to save the village of Delherz. With a troubled heart, Jan ordered the charge. In the midst of the battle, Jan and Krashnak found each other in a massive melee between a unit of knights Panther and a herd of Beastmen. Jan had already killed the beast’s hero, but this would be a lot harder. In the following challenge, Jan’s armor deflected two blows that could’ve easily killed him and in return he managed to wound the beastlord gravely. Just when Krashnak readied his greataxe for another deadly blow towards Jan, Jan’s horse reared and kicked out with great strength towards the beastlord. Name: Sir Kael Friedrickson, Champion of Wissenland. Type: Empire Knight. Virtues: None. Description: The son of a knight fallen on hard times Kael Friedrickson was never destined for greatness. Born on the Wissenland banks of the River Sol Kael lived mostly with his mother and his father’s servant while Argis Friedrickson rode with Count Hans Kruegor II against the Greenskins and Bretonnians that threatened the Empire. It was understood that Kael was to be a knight after his father, and so his martial training began at an early age. On his eleventh birthday he was taken by his father to the Knights Griffon and there made a squire to Boris Argenhoff, a knight renowned for his strength of arms on the field of battle and his boorish nature in the feast halls. Still, Kael could ask for no better teacher. Boris demanded he be prompt, quick, and strong. Argis was a good friend of his, and seeing to the tutelage of his son was an honor to Boris, who drove the youth hard and strong through his years as a squire. Kael learned the art of swordplay, the use of a bow and a variety of pole arms. Riding, which was second nature to him, was refined into a tool of war. On his sixteenth birthday Kael rode with the pistoliers, and surviving this trial was inducted in the Knights Griffon at the age of eighteen. Kael’s service to the Knights Griffon was honorable; he was loyal to his Templar and to his count, Victor Kruegor. He rode across the realm fighting against all foes, most notable were his forays into former-Solland to suppress greenskins and the bandits who used the wasteland as their hideaway. One summer Kael was afflicted with a dream, a vision of a fallen knight. With the permission of his Templar he set off on a quest, riding through Solland and Stirland until he came upon the site of the final battle between a knight and his wyvern foe. Pinned against the trunk of a great tree was the skeleton of a Knight of the Silver Mountain, his broken lance lodged in the ribs of a great wyvern skeleton. Kael saw that while the knight’s armor was broken in many places that his shield, pinned under the great claw of the beast was unmarred. Prying it loose Kael discovered it to be the Shield of Magnus, so-called not because it was carried by the legendary savior of the Empire but because one of his bodyguard had taken Magnus into his arms during the great Battle of Kislev. Magnus was wounded to the point that no man could survive, and his blood flowed over the shield. Then the knight witnessed a miracle as Magnus rose and returned to battle. The shield of the knight was infused with Magnus’ determination, and thus could not be broken by any means so long as the bearer’s faith in the Empire held strong. Kael took this holy relic and departed to Wissenburg, where Count Victor Kruegor was holding a tournament to determine his champion. It was customary for every knight in Wissenland to try for the position of champion. When Kael strode into the tournament grounds outside of Wissenburg the sitting champion was Hermann Dorschle, a large bear of a man who captained the Greatswords who protected the body of Count Kruegor. In his first tournament Kael performed with the skill of a knight ten years his senior, defeating in one on one combat some of the finest knights in the realm. Finally the young knight stood across the sands from Hermann Dorschle himself, under the amused eye of Count Kruegor. After a long battle in which the Shield of Magnus proved invaluable Kael defeated Dorschle, casting the greatsword captain to the ground. The championship was his, save for one last test. Count Victor himself descended from his box to the sands, taking the sword of one of his Companions he bid that Kael use another shield, for the Count had recognized the Shield of Magnus. The crowd fell silent; many believed that Kael would abdicate then and flee the country in shame. Instead the young knight cast away his shield and took up another. Victor smiled, and engaged the youth in battle. It was the finest battle at the tournament, and though it was Victor who prevailed in the end Kael had fought with enough zeal and skill to warrant his post as champion. Later he would be appointed as the High Marshall, commander of Wissenland’s armies second only to the Count. He was given the Sword of Lady Lydia, a blade older than Victor’s Runefang that would be his badge of office as champion. His exploits while champion are legendary, and there is not a warrior in Wissenland who can boast of having bested Kael. A skilled general the armies of Wissenland had a strong leader in Kael Friedrickson, who has led many a decisive counter-attack with the Count’s Companion Cavalry. He wears black armor to distinguish himself from the rest of the Count’s army, a clear challenge to any warrior on the opposite side of the field to try and test their mettle. Now with word of a tournament in Bretonnia Victor finds himself owing a debt of honor to a Bretonnian Duke whose champion had intervened on behalf of the Count during a bandit attack in the Grey Mountains. To honor the debt Victor sends Kael to compete in a tournament, wearing the heraldry of the Kruegors and bereft of his champion’s sword and enchanted shield. |
