The History of Chateau Mortagne

The history of Chateau Mortagne, which lay on the shores of Sea of Claws, is recorded henceforth. From the first Spring of the noble lord's instatement into rulership to the current date. A current map of his holdings is also presented, which also shows some of the surrounding countryside.

I have also managed to find this letter, which was written by the very hand of the Lord of Chateau Mortagne: I, Baron Rolande, eleventh son of Lord Hayden, and nephew to Duke Bohemond de Bastonne, do so humbly request apportionment of a parcel of land upon which to etch out my own governorship.
Having completed my errand of Knighthood by leading my regiment of Knights Errant to victory by smashing through the Chaos lines under my uncle's banner at the Battle of Oxbourg Field, and slaying a Champion of Slaanesh as my regiment crashed into their ranks, I have earned my right to carve out a domain for myself.
I wish my domain to be on the southern reaches of Bastonne, near the forest of Chalons. While I survived the battle, the foul chaos beasts slew many of my childhood friends, and two of my brothers, and there would be no greater honour than expanding our realm into the forest, and guarding our fair and noble land against incursions of the foul herds of the Fell Powers. .

Spring of Year 1

Dear Sire...

Greetings my Lord, Baron Rolande Mortagne.

My name is Lucius, I have been appointed to act as your scribe. I am a common man milord, but educated to better be of service in your great endeavour of running the estate which will now and forever be known unto all as Chateau Mortagne.

Your estate Milord lies at the far north of the great lands of Bretonnia, on the very coast of the sea of claws in the marches of Couronne area. Though we are closer to the empire city of Marrienburg than any Bretonnian city we are proudly Bretonnian. Being so close to the empire is certainly a worry milord but of far more concern are the raids across the sea of claws by the accursed chaos warriors, though I have heard milord that you are not without skill in dispatching these savage scum.

Your realm Milord consists of six areas which are placed around Chateau Mortagne.

Directly to the east of the chateau is the modest village of Pembroke here is where most of your population resides in the two shelter squares of serf housing.

Your farmstead and one field square are to the north west of the chateau in an area called Sea View, this is a raised area that gives a commanding view across the cursed Sea of Claws. It is said milord that on a clear day one can see the other side, but even if this is the peasants exaggeration it must be said that we will have time to prepare if the powers of chaos should decide a crossing.

To the north east milord is an area which has gained its name of rushing rapids due to the razor sharp rocks which split the river Alder in two just before it reaches the sea. This is excellent pasture as it used to be mainly flood plain so good rich soil is found there. Unfortunately we are not the only ones with our eyes upon this area, some foul dark elves (undoubtedly left behind on a chaos raid) have taken up residence there, they will need to be removed before settling all of that area.

West of the Chateau is an area called the gap, so called (I assume) by the lack of imagination of the peasantry who found a gap between two forests. This area has been visited on many occasions by green skinned invaders from the deep woods.

To the south west are the south pastures where good farming would surely thrive under your leadership.

And lastly to the south east is an area known as the glade favoured for picnicking by many of the peasantry the Autumn leaves here are a sight to behold. It is said that Giles the uniter camped in this area to rest his men and have them march into Couronne proud of their achievement.

Now that you have knowledge of the lands of your realm milord we come to the business of running them.

Firstly milord the kings tax for this turn is 1 revenue, do you wish it paid.

The peasant taxes rate is set at average which is the normal rate for all new estates, do you wish this rate changed or is this acceptable, perhaps even a peasant levy may be in order.

Rations are at full milord, this may be increased to double reduced to half or left as is milord.

Spring is the time for planting and we have 1 field available do you wish this field planted and of what quality.

Do you wish to have any new men at arms trained, though we have ten they will not be able to hold the realm against any large assault until their number increases.

You may also wish to consider building and other improvements to help the estate grow.

Should you have any other wishes my lord that my peasant mind has failed to consider just say the word and I shall see it is done.

Yours faithfully,

Scribe Lucius.
