The History of Chateau Delhousie

Within these pages lay the history of the estate of Chateau Delhousie, which stands on the northern side of the Upper Grismere River and at the foot hills of the Grey Mountains. From the instatement of the current lord of the land, Lord Korrin of Delhousie, to the current date. Also included is a map of the countryside in and around the estate of Chateau Delhousie.

Although it is not my place to speak of lords with anything less than awe, it is my duty to record all I know, and I have collected the following information on the Lord Korrin of Delhousie:
If trouble is to be found Korrin is most likely to be present if not involved. His love of gambling, fighting and women has finally driven his father to request of the King to allow/to send Korrin to the frontier to learn his responsibility to the King. The request was granted but many feel it was because of several wealthy families wanting young Korrin far away from their daughters and perhaps their wife’s as well. Help to pushed Korrin’s rapid appointment to Chateau Delhousie. Korrin while despondent about leaving the joys he knows is determined to create a new successful chapter in his life for how else could he entice the lovely ladies to visit?

Spring of Year 1

Dear Sire...

Greetings, and welcome to your new estate, Chateau Delhousie. I am your humble servant Scribe Bruce, and shall do my best to inform you of the happenings of your estate. I hope that this, your first Spring of rulership, is a glorious start to a long and wise rule.

Since this is my first report, I shall give you a summery of the surrounding countryside and then the lands within the estate. Following that, I shall, to my best abilities, bring the matters of state to your attention.

To the north and east, the Grey Mountains span as great barriers of jagged stone. To the west, the road leads away from your estate and towards the great and glorious city of Parravon. The south border of your estate meets with the northern shores of the Upper Grismeris River, a massive body of water which flows through a large portion of Bretonnia.

Chateau Delhousie itself rests in the north-west corner of the estate, overlooking the road to Parravon and able to see most of your lands from the higher parts of the grand Chateau.

A fair way south of the Chateau, the estate town sits riverside by the great Upper Grismeris. For this reason, it has been named Rivermark, most of your loyal subjects make their homes in the small village. A small number (ten to be exact) of the population are trained and armed as Men-At-Arms. They will protect your estate, and its lands, with their very lives.

North of Rivermark, and slightly south-east of the Chateau, the Farmers make their home in a portion of land named the Stone Meads. Living in a Farmstead and working the Field, these Farmers will work hard to provide your estate with enough food to survive the years of your rule.

Part of your lands, called Cashmar Pass, called thus because a small pass found near there leads into a large cave network that spans deep into the Mountains. A small part of this land has been cleared and is ready for development, and much of the land is uncleared, but also in fine condition for building upon once the lands have been cleared. Do not let the tales of Goblins living in the caves deter you, as it is of my most humble opinion that is all that they are, just tales.

Three other stretches of land are uncleared, but would be easily built upon should the clearing process be completed.

First, Kings Row, an area bordering on the road to Parravon. The lands here are considered safe, and many natural fruits and pleasant trees may be found growing in Kings Row. A most fine place indeed.

Second, a smaller section of land named Delhousie Meadows (in honour of the great Chateau). Not much interesting may be said of this little area, besides that many small groves may be found within it.

Third, the larger and much more dangerous area known as The Vales. Rocky outcrops are dotted about The Vales like ants around an ant-mound. It is widely believed that this is because a major land-slide occurred a few decades ago here, carried small, loose parts of the mountain down with it. Knoblars, Goblins and Stone Trolls have been seen in the area, and many have died who have ventured into The Vale to see if the creatures exist.

I hope my report has shed some light on the state of your realm, and the lands within it. A few matters of state need your attention, however, and being lord you have final say on all things:

The Lord's Tax is 1 Revenue for now, do you wish it paid?

The Farmers at Stone Meads ask for permission to plant this Spring's crops. If you do wish crops to be planted in the Field, at what quality do you wish them to be sown?

The current Tax Rate at this time is at Average, giving us enough Revenue to Upkeep the realm, and pay the Men-At-Arms. However, this amount of income does not allow much more than that. Do you wish to increase the Tax Rate, decrease it (to give a boost to moral) or leave it as is?

Rationing at present time is set at Full Rations, do you wish this changed?

The Men-At-Arms are few in number, and they are doubtful of their ability to withstand an assault from any real enemy force. Do you, in your wisdom, think that these doubts are well founded, and wish to train more? If so, how many of the population are to be armed and trained?

Finally, the free parcel of land at Cashmar Pass is in prime condition for building upon. Some examples of what you could build are a Mine (if the minerals may be found in that area), a new Farmstead or perhaps a new Shelter Square to found a new town.

Any other actions you wish to be done, merely inform me and I will see them carried out to the best of my abilities.

I now end my first report to you, and eagerly await your response.

You most faithful servant,

Scribe Bruce.

Lord's Response

My good scribe Bruce please pardon my late response but several young ladies had be at wits end.

First of all I wish the Fields of Stone Meads sown at Agriculture level. While I know this hurts the pocketbook I hope to offset it with the harvest.

Also please have another farmstead built at Cashmer Pass 1.

Also as we hear rumors of Goblins and other ill sort please increase the men at arms by 2.

Instead of raising Taxes lets raise funds by a peasant levey of 50 and let it be known that I have no intention of another for at least 5 seasons.

Of Course we must pay the Kings Tax so please see that it is sent

With the work to be done and the peasent levy I must keep the rations as they are.

Lord Korrin

Summer of Year 1

Dear Sire...

The Spring has past and the Summer is here. The heat is palpable but the longer hours of sunlight have pushed the Goblins and Stone Trolls into their dwellings.

The Agricultural Field you ordered to be planted was sown, and just recently harvested. It is of some concern that the Food Stocks yielded from the crop, by my calculations, may have trouble feeding the population until next Harvest, should the population grow too much more.

If you give the command, a purchasing of Food Stocks, however, should put a stop to this potential problem.

The Farmstead you ordered constructed in the Cashmar Pass was completed over the Spring, and now is ready to farm any Fields you ready next Spring.

Following your orders, two of the townspeople were trained and armed, and shall now join the ranks of your Men-At-Arms.

Some complaint was made from the population when the Peasant Levy was collected by the Men-At-Arms. The unrest was quelled slightly upon hearing of your promise (of no further Levies for at least 5 Seasons) and when reminded of who it was that protected them from the dangers of the land.

A handful of matters of state require your attention, and I shall do my best, as a humble commoner, to inform you of them:

First of all, the Lord's Tax for this Summer is 1 Revenue. Should it be paid?

Rejoice! The Harvest Day Festival is upon us and the celebrations in thanks to the Lady of the food yielded by the Harvest shall soon begin. As Lord of this land, it is your decision how much Revenue and Food Stocks are spent in the feast day. The common-folk hope you shall spend generously on the event.

All of the free, cleared land within the estate has been built upon, and new land must be cleared before major development of your lands may continue. Do you wish to clear any land?

A second annual event during the Summer, is the mid-Summer gathering. In this gathering, the peasant-folk bring their strongest sons to be considered for duty in service of the Men-At-Arms (which pays better than any other occupation). This event will allow me to obtain men of fighting age, strength and courage to enter the ranks of the Men-At-Arms, at a reduced cost. Do you wish to take advantage of this event, and if so, how many Men-At-Arms do you wish trained?

I now bid thee farewell until my Autumn Report, and await your orders for the Season of Summer with great interest.

Your servant,

Scribe Bruce.

Lord's Response

Well Bruce it appears that the Lady did not favor our crops this year. This is a not a welcome turn of events as more of the funds we raised will have to be deverted to addressing the possible food shortage. As we need the favor of the lady and it is time for the Harvest Day Festival 20 revenue for the event. I wish to build a Animal barn in each farmstead to help our food stocks.
Also please clear the land of cashmar 2 and prepare it for planting in the spring. Please see to the hiring and training of 3 more man at arms.
While I know it is a hardship I am commanding you to lower the food rations to half please let my subjects know that I regret such a action but we must maintain enough grain to plant in the spring.
And send the Kings tax at once.

Autumn of Year 1

Dear Sire...

The Autumn is now upon us, and thus I give you my Autumn Report. I it is my utmost wish that this report serves you well, and will do my best to keep you informed of the situations that may arise within your grand estate.

The Revenue you generously gave to be used in the Harvest Day Festival was well spent. A huge table was set within the centre of the village of Rivermark and it was covered with some uncommon dishes of food from the Empire, Kislev and of course, Bretonnia. The peasantry, not accustomed to such rich food, mostly ate the good, common Bretonnian foods on offer but I was more adventurous. Although, I must say, I did regret treating a bottle of Kislevite "Vodka" as if it was a bottle of fine Bretonnian wine, and drunk much of it. I learned my lesson with quite a large hangover afterwards, however.

After the somewhat small, but very interesting feast, the entertainment then begun. Musicians, dancers and magicians showed their skills to a very impressed crowd for an hour and a half. Afterwards, the crowd then turned its attention to paying homage to the Lady of the Lake.

Thanks to the Revenue you supplied, I was able to obtain an old boat from the docks further up the River, and hired some craftsmen to make it resemble to boat used to carry Gilles the Uniter's spirit into the Lady of the Lake's mystical spirit realm. This boat was transported to Rivermark and, upon midnight, set adrift into the River in honour of the Lady and Gilles himself.

Enough about the Harvest Day Festival, however. The two Animal Barns you commanded to be constructed were built, and now stand ready you house the livestock during the harsh Winter months.

The land parcel you ordered cleared in the Cashmar Pass area is now ready to be used as a Field. By your wisdom, the estate grows quickly.

I did my best to make the peasantry understand the reasons behind the lowering of the Rationing, and I think that I convinced most that it was necessary, and only temporary. Some, however, are still unhappy about it, but that cannot be helped.

Now, to bring the matters of state for the Season of Autumn to your attention:

The Lord's Tax for this Season is 1 Revenue. Do you wish it to be paid?

The Men-At-Arms you requested were trained, being the three men in the village of strongest mind and spirit. They shall serve you well, I have no doubt. My question is, do you want to train any more, or is the fifteen fighting men currently filling the garrison enough?

With all of the cleared lands within your estate developed, and not enough Revenue currently filling the reserves to clear another Land Square, the only real construction option is smaller Upgrades. Do you wish to build any?

Any other actions you wish done, merely give the command, and it shall be done.

I hope my report has given you insight into the happenings within your realm.

Your scribe,

Scribe Bruce.

It appears that the Fall season will be a slow period for my realm. After much working of the numbers for both funding and food here is what we must do.

I regret that we must continue the half rations

We must send 51 grain to the Royal grainary to help boost our funds.

Pay the King's tax post haste

We must maintain the men at arms at the current level

Winter of Year 1

Dear Sire...

The Winter has set in, and the Grey Mountains that tower above the estate are heavy with snow and ice.

The Goblins and Trolls of The Vales have been more active of late, the long nights of Winter allowing the Goblins to roam unseen, and the chill bringing the Trolls from their lairs to hunt. Thankfully, no townsfolk have died from attacks. The Goblins are, at present, too cowardly to attempt an attack.

Unfortunately, milord, I bring more ill tidings. Not all of the townspeople have weathered the Winter unscathed. Most people will survive, but I am unhappy to report that five people have gone missing. It is widely thought that they have died from the cold and been buried by the snow.

'Tis not all news of ill that I bring, milord. The Food Stocks you ordered sold to the Royal Granary reached their destination in one piece, and the returning Revenue has been added to your reserves.

With the news of the realm explained, I shall now bring your attention to the matters of state before you:

As ever, the King requires a Lord's Tax from your most grand estate. This Season, it is a modest 3 Revenue. Should it be paid?

Unfortunately, the Winter's cold forbids construction of any real kind and also stops the clearing of any land, as the snows must melt and the ice clear before the land will be suitable for clearing. However, smaller Upgrades may be built on your existing, already developed lands. Do you wish to build any Upgrades, milord?

Do not let my reports of darkness dampen your spirits, however, milord. I am sure that the Winter is the Night in which is banished by the Dawn of Spring. Harvest time is but a short five or six months away, and it is with high spirit I inform thee that we have enough Food Stocks to survive, and plant crops, for the next Harvest.

Thus ends my report.

Your most loyal of subjects,

Scribe Bruce.

Spring of Year 2

Dear Sire...

The Winter has faded and the Spring is here. I must say, it is comforting to be away from the chill of Winter and into the pleasant, but not overwhelming, warmth of Spring.

This Season marks the start of the second year of your glorious rein as Lord of the Estate! It is my utmost hope that you are the ruler of Chateau Delhousie for many years to come.

With the cold of Winter forced back by the Spring warmth, the Trolls have retreated to their dwellings within the imposing Grey Mountains above us. The Goblins still watch us with malevolent eyes from the darkness of night, but are too few in number to threaten us at this time.

The population received your command to return to Full Rations with much excitement. They now fully understand your wisdom in imposing the Half Rations for the past Seasons, and thank you greatly for returning the Rationing to normal. Indeed, you are fair and just above all others, except perhaps the King of Bretonnia himself, milord.

I have much to report:

First of all, the Lord's Tax for this Season is a small 1 Revenue. Do you wish it paid, milord?

The Lord's Tax is not the only payment the King wishes from us at this time, however. He has sent out a call to all of his subjects. He requests 40 Food Stocks from every Estate, to help feed the Royal Army.

Luckily for us, it is merely a request. I have calculated that we cannot afford to pay the request, feed the population and plant two crops. My common mind suggests that we send a letter of apology to the King along with the Lord's Tax, but nothing more. Your mind is greater than mine, however, and I am sure you will be able to resolve the situation.

On a happier note, the Season is Spring and it is time to plant the crops! The Farmers still are in need of your command before they may plant the Harvest's crops. How many Fields do you wish to be sown, and at what quality?

Unfortunately, I report that the Revenue coffers are slowly emptying! If we are to spend no further Revenue on anything but Upkeep and Men-At-Arms wages, we will still run out of income in less than 2 years!

In a nutshell, the Taxes are not covering the Wages, Upkeep and Lord's Taxes that must be spent each Season, and we are losing Revenue at a rate of 5 Revenue per Season.

What plan do you have to fix this most troublesome of problems, milord. My common mind suggests a Tax raise or Peasant Levy, but I am merely a peasant, and you are a noble lord.

Finally, if you see it fit for any other actions to be done, give the command, and it shall be so.

I now end my second Spring report.

Your scribe,

Scribe Bruce.

Lord's Response

Bruce

I am happy to hear that my people are happy with the return of full rations. And that the winter passed with little hardships for all.

On to Business of course pay the King's tax at once but as you so well noted we are unable to supply the King's request for food stocks as we need all we have to plant the new season. So please send him a note expressing our regrets on being unable to meet his request.

Please have the farmers plant both fields at Normal level and have all my subjects pray with me to the Lady to grant us a great harvest.

I am not yet ready to raise the taxes in the firm faith that the lady will bless us with a great harvest that we can then sale to raise the funds we need.

Keep the men at arms alert with a larger presence watching over the farmers as the work the fields.

As for other growth I fully intend to build a market square as soon as funds are available so in the mean time plot out the best location for it.

As always thank you for your efforts

Lord Korrin

Summer of Year 2

Dear Sire...

Our prayers were answered, milord! Through the Lady's most divine grace we have been blessed with a bountiful crop. More than enough to feed the population for the coming year, and plant new crops next year.

Through the Farmer's toil and the Faith of thee, my most honourable lord, the Chateau shall survive.

However, much news is there to report, and I shall now bring it before you.

The Revenue stocks are dangerously low, milord! We are down to the last few coins in the treasury, and if we do not remedy this quickly, the Estate shall fall into disrepair!

With only 1 Revenue left, immediate action is needed. However, I believe you informed me of your intentions to sell off some of the excess Food Stocks gained. I believe we could sell off up to 200 Food Stocks to the Royal Granary and still feed the population, although you are wiser than I and know better of such matters.

Although it is somewhat early for such advice, the land parcel at Rivermark No.7 looks like the best area for building a Market upon.

Now, to the matters of state:

The Lord's Tax for this Season is 1 Revenue. Paying this would reduce our Revenue to nothing! Do you still wish to pay it?

One way to give a sudden increase of Revenue is to extract a Peasant Levy from the population. If you, in your wisdom, wish this to be done, specify the amount to be collected. I advise a small collection of 30 Revenue.

With the glorious bounty the Lady of the Lake has blessed us with, it is fitting that we pay respects to Her during the Havest Day Festival. How much Revenue and Food Stocks do you wish to be spent in the celebrations, milord?

In times of celebration such as this, one of your subjects has committed a foul and Major Crime. Bernard, one of your peasantry, was discovered to be an Empire spy!

He was discovered when a Man-At-Arms overheard an obviously illegal discussion between Bernard and an Empire-born traveller. They were both arrested and searched, and incriminating evidence was found. Papers written in Reikspeil (the tongue of the Empire-folk) and Sigmarite religious icons were found in Bernard's possessions.

Almost none of the peasantry of Bretonnia can read, and even fewer can read Reikspeil, so the papers and Sigmarite icons were taken as proof of Treachery.

Upon inspecting the documents and papers (I, fortunately, know how to read Reikspeil) I have discovered that Bernard is not the only Empire spy within the Estate, with up to half a dozen others within the Estate. Within the documents they all use aliases such as "Falcon", so I cannot say who else of your subjects are actually Empire spies.

Unfortunately, we were forced to release the Empire-born traveller. It would start a war between Bretonnia and the Empire to imprison or harm one of their subjects, and that would cause great damage to our fair lands.

However, I did manage to retain possession of all of the papers and other items on his person, and I have many of my assistants looking over them as we speak.

The Traitor, Bernard, is still in our custody, however. What punishment should he receive for such a foul crime as Treason?

With that disturbing news, I end my report.

Your humble scribe,

Scribe Bruce.

It appears that perhaps we have a chance to get things rolling

First things first please send a note explaining the reason our payment to the king will be late. Given this I can not inflict a peasent levy at this time or raise taxes but I will look at doing one or the other in the fall.

In Honor of the Lady please use 30 food for the festival

Please send 201 grain to the royal grainary to help fill our coffers

Now to the matter of The Spy Bernard continue to go over his papers. I shall not tolerate any enemy spies to use my lands for their foul deads. So here is my decree
First in the public square let his crime be told. Also let it be known that any other spies found later will face a much stiffer punishment.
Then the Spy Bernard's belongs shall be confiscated with the exception of the clothes he is wearing, after being very well searched of course. He then is to be escorted to the edge of my lands and banned from ever returning under the pain of death.
I will offer a two day grace for any who wish to confess to working with him

Lord Korrin

Autumn of Year 2

Dear Sire...

Your wisdom is great, and although the stockpiles in the treasury were low, now they are swelling with Revenue gained by your most wise commands.

I now bring thee my Autumn Report:

The large shipment of Food Stocks you ordered to be sold were transported safely, and the 67 Revenue gained from the sale now fills the treasury. In one swift action, milord, you avoided the hardships that having no Revenue would bring. You are most intelligent.

Speaking of Revenue, the King has accepted the reasons you gave for the lateness of the Lord's Tax payment. 'Tis only a small amount of Revenue that has not been paid, but he still expects it to be given over soon.

In other matters, the Harvest Day Festival was a joyous time indeed! The feasting went long into the night, and many songs were sung by the peasantry, despite the absence of any entertainers.

I am sure that the Lady would be most pleased with the amount of tribute that was offered to Her. Enough food to feed two families for a year was given as offerings. Hopefully, she will gift us with another rich Harvest next year.

Although you mercifully offered a two day grace to any who would confess, none came forward. I have spent long hours studying the documents and have as many as fifteen of the townspeople as possible suspects. However, I am sure no more than a third of those people are actually guilty of any crime at all.

I shall keep you informed of my progress, milord.

Now, the matters of state that require your attention:

The Lord's Tax of this Season is 8 Revenue. It is so high because of the Revenue gained from the sold off Food Stocks. Our Debt to the King is 1 Revenue. So a full payment of what is owed would be 9 Revenue.

We have quite a large sum of Revenue in the treasury at present, and it would be, in my commoner opinion, wise to make use of it quickly. Do you wish any Men-At-Arms training to commence, or any construction to be started?

As the final news of the Season, a most troubling set of events has taken place:

As is usual, two Men-At-Arms were patrolling the lands of King's Row, and the change of the guard for that was set to take place one hour after sunset. The hour came, and the two Men-At-Arms who arrived to allow the current guard found no sign of their comrades.

A quick search of the area by the new guards found no sign of the missing Men-At-Arms. Even when half the garrison was summoned to look, no trace of blood or even any disturbed earth was found. Puzzled, the search continued into the morning hours.

Eventually, almost twelve hours after the missing Men-At-Arms had vanished, they were found. They were at the base of the Grey Mountains, a short distance north-east from the King's Row area.

Unfortunately, the Men-At-Arms were not alive. Terrifyingly, they had both been drained of all of the moisture in their bodies, leaving only shrunken corpses.

I know not what could cause this to happen, but I fear more deaths are to follow, as this was obviously no natural beast who slew the two brave Men-At-Arms, may their souls dwell in the glorious realm of the Lady.

On that grim note, I end my report.

Your loyal scribe,

Scribe Bruce.

Winter of Year 2

Dear Sire...

The Winter has come, and with it many ill tidings have come. This Season shall test all of your leadership skills, I am certain you are up to the task, my grand liege.

Firstly, the two new Men-At-Arms you ordered trained have joined the Men-At-Arms garrison. You are indeed wise in these actions, milord, as the Men-At-Arms have fought bravely against all manner of evils this Season, milord.

Rivermark No.7 has been cleared, and awaits future development.

First, another two of the Men-At-Arms disappeared during the biting frost of Winter, and have not been found. After a week long searched turned up nothing, it is believed the two unfortunate individuals met the same end as their comrades in previous months, but have been buried by the Winter snows.

This is most troubling, and the Men-At-Arms have begun to search the houses of the townspeople to look for clues of what would kill trained Men-At-Arms so quickly and easily.

Second, a new threat has emerged. I am certain that the creatures that I am about to report to you are working in concert with the force that has been draining Men-At-Arms of their lives.

Every man, woman and child within the Estate knows well what occurred just a week or two ago, but none know why.

Beastmen, the foul mutation of a natural animal into a humanoid killing machine, made a lightning fast attack on the Estate. From the Grey Mountains and from the road to Parravon they came, wielding crude clubs and axes.

The force swept through King's Row and chased the Farmers of The Stone Meads and Cashmar Pass from their houses. Luckily, pillaging was not their goal, and they did no harm to the Farmsteads or Fields.

They then swept west as a massive force of dozens, and converged on the Chateau itself! I was glad you were not present within the Chateau that day, and were instead receiving medical treatment up in Parravon for the Flu.

A portion of the garrison is always present to guard the Chateau, and they battled hard against the tide of Beastmen that swept into the noble halls of your abode. Blood was spilt and many of the creatures were hacked down by your valiant men, but at a cost.

Four of the Men-At-Arms had perished, and the rest were badly wounded, by the time the rest of the garrison arrived to aid the besieged defenders. The Gors and Ungors then quickly fled into the night. I am certain they shall return!

Milord, what shall we do? An evil presence drains the lives of the Men-At-Arms, whilst a brutal tribe of Beastmen has turned its attention on us! Only your wise leadership, and kindness of the Lady, shall save us now.

I shall now inform you of the matters of state that require your intelligence and attention:

The Lord's Tax for this Season is a very fair 1 Revenue. Should we pay it?

It seems that the fear induced by the Beastmen and evil presence has driven one of your townspeople to act rashly and foolishly. Beren, one of the poorest townspeople in the Estate, assaulted a full patrol of Men-At-Arms. He was armed with a plank of wood, and screaming something about how they were heretics and such nonsense.

He managed to deal out a number of punishing blows with his makeshift weapon before being subdued by the Men-At-Arms. Therefore, he is charged with about three counts of Assaulting a Man-At-Arms. What shall be Beren's punishment, milord?

The Winter chill does not allow us to perform any construction this Season. However, smaller Upgrades could be built, if you wish it.

The Men-At-Arms number has suffered from the six casualties of this Season, and a good deal of the remaining Men-At-Arms are nursing all manner of wounds. Do you wish to spend any of the Estate's Revenue on training new Men-At-Arms?

Finally, if you wish any other actions to be done this bleak Winter, please give the order and I shall see it performed.

You are our only hope of survival in these dark times, milord.

Your thankful scribe,

Scribe Bruce.
